Baker's Island, off the Massachusetts coast near Salem, is home to approximately 100 summer residents and an historic lighthouse. During the War of 1812, a Baker's Island light keeper was able to warn the Constitution that she was being followed by two British warships. Using his detailed knowledge of the waters, he was able to pilot her to safety under the guns of Fort Sewall in Marblehead, saving her from capture.
