Product Details

The 2015 annual Marblehead ornament celebrates the life of James J. H. Gregory (1827-1910), devoted Marbleheader, Philanthropist, and “Seed King.”

Many locals recognize the Squash House at 59 Elm Street, but only few know the story.Gregory was educated in Marblehead schools, and went on to graduate college in 1850, beginning his work-life as an educator. A lifelong love of botany compelled him to answer an ad in the New England Farmer for a nice winter squash. He sent the author of the article some seeds from a squash he particularly liked, which his father called Hubbard Squash because a lady named Hubbard had given him the seeds. The author liked the squash so much, he wrote about it and almost immediately, JJH started receiving orders for seeds from around the world. Thus began the accidental start of the James J. H. Gregory Seed Company.

Purchase without a stand for hanging on the Christmas tree or add a stand for year round display.
